| Cooking food without
electricity is something not may
urban-dwelling people have any idea how to
do. This page will help you, build a
proper fire, prepare cooking surface, use
the SUN as your oven and much more! |
| For most fires to be
effective, pick an area free (or make it
free) of dead grass, leaves or anything that
would catch fire, spread. Next dig a
pit (size depends on what's cookin...or what
the fire's for). Surround it with
Medium to large rocks. |
| put in your kindling, which
is small twigs, moss, bark or other things
that will catch quickly. I learned a
trick with cotton balls and vaseline, makes
an EXCELLENT wick to get kindling going
really quick. |
| next put larger branches on
top of the kindling once you've got a small
flame going. Then when these larger
branches catch, put on your bigger
logs...now you have a fire! |
| The fire I've described will
burn through the night and leave a hot bed
of coals you can stir up and make breakfast
over. To learn more

| Other Fire types for warmth,
cooking smaller things can be made by
digging a deep (1-2ft) hole and then
digging a tunnel on the 'windy' side of the
pit about a foot or so away that the tunnel
enters the bottom side of the pit. This is a
Dakota Fire Hole (click the link for
detailed instructions and pictures too! |

| Going Solar! |
| Now if you want the neatest
way to cook without fire, or electricity,
then you have to be talking SOLAR and
here's a solar oven you can buy, or one you
can build (yourself). |
 |
Now of course you can
build this with materials you see every
day. But for those of you who don't have the
time, click the oven to the left and you can
buy one. Solar ovens are great because
they don't rely on dry wood, fuel or
matches, just good 'ol sunshine!
